How to Grow a Permission Based Email List

A key concept when it comes to email marketing is permission. It’s important to do this because most individuals tend to ignore or delete emails from a company or person they’ve never heard of. In short, your message will most likely be considered spam.

If you are running a business or a company and have a very small email list, then you need to work at building it. You definitely want this list to grow, but it’s necessary that you do it appropriately. The right way to build this list is by gathering permission based subscriptions.

How to Create a Permission Based List

Sign-Up Form

One way to grow a permissions based list is by having a sign-up box on all pages of your site. Ideally, you should put a sign-up box at the top of your website and after each post. This is better than having one page dedicated for registrations. However, you should make sure that your sign up box isn’t interfering with the other elements in your website. Here’s a sample website with a sign-up box.

Forward Link

Include a link that allows your customers to forward your emails to their family, friends, and even colleagues. This will help you get more people to sign up for your list as well. Make sure to have a link back going to your site so that they can also explore your website when they receive the forwarded emails.

Encourage People to Sign up for Your List

Start a subscription drive for customers on your website or actual shop outlet. Print out forms that can be filled out by your customers and make sure that it has a tick box indicating that they have agreed to be a subscriber to your emails. As a precaution, you should keep all these online or paper forms on file in the event that someone complains about being spammed later on.

The best way to get a hold of many subscribers at one time is by offering an incentive. This could either be discounts, free gifts, special access and early notices to sales, or a raffle. If you don’t have any idea for contests, you could give out free information useful for your target market. Little gimmicks like these will entice more people to sign up for subscription.

Advertise Your Company

Advertising your company or business in related email newsletters will help as well. There are a lot of email newsletters that have space saved specifically for other publications. For example, if you are a company that sells beauty products, then you may want to think about advertising or promoting your business in email newsletters for women, such as online magazine subscriptions.

Before starting your email marketing campaign, make sure that you have a sizeable permission based email list. If you’re unhappy with the results, keep in mind that nothing is easy at first. About 30% of email addresses are changed every year, so this means that some emails on your list may not actually work. Your current strategy may not be as enticing to your target audience as well, so just keep adjusting and tweaking your campaign until you get the results you’re after.
